The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funds this project to increase pediatric HIV case identification, linkage to Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) services, and HIV prevention, as well as to respond to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Children (VAC). Additionally, the project provides economic strengthening initiatives for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), youth, and caregivers. The project works in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania and other stakeholders to serve Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and caregivers in the implementation regions.
Currently, the project operates in 41 councils within 9 region of Arusha, Dodoma, Geita, Kilimanjaro, Manyara, Mara, Singida and Tanga
Regions where the project is implemented
The project leverages existing health structures and systems, alongside Faith Community Engagement and palliative care, to scale up HIV diagnosis, treatment, and Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) monitoring for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), youth, and caregivers.
The project works through community and legal structures, including schools, Women and Children Protection Committees (WCPC), Police Gender and Children Desks, religious platforms, and traditional leaders. These entities help raise awareness of HIV, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Violence Against Children (VAC) by addressing various social and cultural drivers of violence and HIV infection.
To enhance the well-being and economic resilience of at-risk young women and men (ages 10-17) and Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) caregivers, the project implements household- and group-based Economic Strengthening (ES) activities. Collaborations with the government, private sector, and other partners provide beneficiaries with access to ES services and income-generating opportunities. This helps overcome economic and social barriers to accessing HIV services, ensuring ART adherence, and preventing VAC/GBV and new HIV infections.
